Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the latter half of the 11th century greatly transformed The Anglo-Saxon ways of living.Anglo-Saxon Grounds Time Norman Conquest 931745114994.jpg Engineering and gardening were abilities that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. However, there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and adornment until the Normans had conquered the whole region. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were massive stone structures constructed in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on understanding offensive and defensive practices. Gardening, a quiet occupation, was impracticable in these fruitless fortifications. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is symbolized in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most unscathed illustration we have. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A significant terrace serves as a discouraging factor to intruders who would try to mine the walls of the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge trimmed into the form of crude battlements.

From Where Did Water Features Originate?

From Where Did Water Features Originate? Himself a highly educated man, Pope Nicholas V led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of hundreds of ancient texts from their original Greek into Latin. In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope resolved to embellish the beauty of the city. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
