Hydro-Statics & Garden Fountains: An Overview

Hydro-Statics & Garden Fountains: An OverviewHydro-Statics & Garden Fountains: Overview 508503607080168.jpg When in equilibrium, liquid applies energy to its container or any other material it comes in contact with. The force used falls into one of two categories: external force or hydrostatic energy. When pushing against a level wall, the fluid applies equal force at assorted points on the wall. Liquid in equilibrium will implement vertical pressure at every point of an object’s exterior when that subject is fully immersed in the liquid. These vertical forces are buoyancy, and the concept by itself is more fully described by Archimedes’principle. Usually, hydrostatic pressure on a point of liquid is a product of the hydrostatic force applied on it. A city’s water supply system, fountains, and artesian wells are all good examples of the application of these principles on containers.

Modern Garden Decor: Fountains and their Beginnings

Pure practicality was the original role of fountains. Water fountains were connected to a spring or aqueduct to provide drinkable water as well as bathing water for cities, townships and villages. Up until the 19th century, fountains had to be more elevated and closer to a water supply, including aqueducts and reservoirs, in order to take advantage of gravity which fed the fountains. Fountains were not only utilized as a water source for drinking water, but also to adorn homes and celebrate the designer who created it. Roman fountains usually depicted imagery of animals or heroes made of metal or stone masks. During the Middle Ages, Muslim and Moorish garden designers included fountains in their designs to re-create the gardens of paradise. Fountains played a considerable role in the Gardens of Versailles, all part of French King Louis XIV’s desire to exert his power over nature. To mark the entrance of the restored Roman aqueducts, the Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries commissioned the building of baroque style fountains in the spot where the aqueducts arrived in the city of Rome

Since indoor plumbing became the norm of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely decorative. Gravity was replaced by mechanical pumps in order to permit fountains to bring in clean water and allow for amazing water displays.

Modern-day fountains function mostly as decoration for community spaces, to honor individuals or events, and compliment entertainment and recreational activities.
