The Main Characteristics of Classic Greek Sculpture
The Main Characteristics of Classic Greek Sculpture The first freestanding sculpture was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable success since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Younger, appealing male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. Thought of by Greeks to embody skin care, the kouroi were shaped into inflexible, forward facing positions with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, well-developed, and athletic. In 650 BC, life-sized variations of the kouroi began to be observed. Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of changes, the Greeks were evolving new sorts of government, expressions of art, and a better understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. Nonetheless, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these battles.
