There are many renowned water fountains in Rome’s city center. Nearly all of them were planned, conceived and constructed by one of the finest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His abilities as a water feature developer and also as a city designer, are observable throughout the avenues of Rome. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. The young Bernini earned encouragement from Popes and influential artists alike, and was an exceptional employee. At the beginning he was recognized for his sculptural skills. He used his ability and melded it effortlessly with Roman marble, most significantly in the Vatican. He was affected by many a great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest effect on his work.

Various types of conduits have been found through archaeological excavations on the island of Crete, the birthplace of Minoan civilization. They were used for water supply as well as removal of storm water and wastewater. Virtually all were made from clay or rock. When manufactured from clay, they were commonly in the format of canals and spherical or rectangular piping.
