The taxation is supposed to decrease sugary drink consumption and increase the consumption of healthier beverages, such as water from fountains. Attempts were made to find out the state of local drinking water fountains in both high- and low-income neighborhoods. Using information gathered by a mobile GPS app, experts were able to ascertain the condition of active water fountains in Berkley. The US Census Community Study database was used to accumulate information related to race and economic status in these locations. The two data sets were compared to identify what class variances, if any, there were in access to operating water fountains. The study was able to determine the demographics of areas with water fountains, also observing whether the shape of the fountains was greater or inferior in lower class neighborhoods. The fact that the fountains were working was not a guarantee that they were well-maintained, since quite a few were in need of maintenance and repair.
