Aspects of Garden Sculpture in Archaic Greece
Aspects of Garden Sculpture in Archaic Greece The first freestanding statuary was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were made to look rigid and commonly had foot in front; the males were vigorous, robust, and naked. Around 650 BC, life-sized models of the kouroi began to be seen. Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of changes, the Greeks were developing new types of government, expressions of art, and a larger awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. Similar to many other periods of historical conflict, disagreements were commonplace, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.Discover Peace with Garden Water Features
