Water fountains will keep working a very long time with regular cleaning and maintenance. A typical concern with fountains is that they tend to accumulate dirt and debris, so it is essential that you keep it free from this. Also, algae has a tendency to build up wherever natural light meets water. Mix hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, or vinegar into the water to avoid this particular problem. Bleach can also be put into the water, but this is not the ideal option because it can hurt birds or other animals. Every 3-4 months, garden fountains should undergo a decent cleaning. Prior to cleaning, all the water must be eliminated. Then use gentle and a soft sponge to clean the innner part of the reservoir. If there is delicate artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Make sure all the soap is totally washed off.
It is highly recommended taking the pump apart to better clean the inside and eliminate any plankton or calcium. To make it less difficult, soak it in vinegar overnight before cleaning.
