Aqueducts: The Remedy to Rome's Water Challenges
Aqueducts: The Remedy to Rome's Water Challenges Prior to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Roma, inhabitants who dwelled on hills had to journey even further down to get their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technologies available at the time to supply water to areas of higher elevation. In the early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed below the ground through Acqua Vergine to furnish water to Pincian Hill. Throughout the time of its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were added at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were manufactured to make it less difficult to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552.
