From Where Did Water Features Originate?
From Where Did Water Features Originate? Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of ancient texts from their original Greek into Latin. It was important for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. The historical Roman custom of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an magnificent celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti.
Modifications and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
The Early, Unappreciated Water-Moving Alternative
The Early, Unappreciated Water-Moving Alternative Though the mechanism created by Agrippa for moving water earned the admiration of Andrea Bacci in 1588, it seemed to fade not long after. It may possibly be that the Acqua Felice, the second of Rome’s earliest modern conduits made the system obsolete when it was attached to the Villa Medici in 1592. The easier reason is that it was forgotten about when Ferdinando left for Florence in 1588, following the passing of his brother Francesco di Medici, to change his rank as cardinal for one as the Grand Duke of Tuscany. #P# There may have been some other impressive water-related works in Renaissance landscapes in the late sixteenth century, such as water fountains which played tunes, water caprices (or giochi d’acqua) and even scenographic water demonstrations, but none of them were operated by water which defied the force of gravity.
