The Early, Largely Ignored, Water-Moving Plan

The Early, Largely Ignored, Water-Moving Plan Sadly, Agrippa’s great plan for raising water wasn’t mentioned much after 1588, when Andrea Bacci acknowledged it publicly. Only years later, in 1592, the earliest contemporary Roman waterway, the Acqua Felice, was attached to the Medici’s villa, probably making the technology outmoded. Although it’s more likely that it was simply discarded when Ferdinando ceded his cardinalship and travelled back to Florence, securing his position as the Grand Duke of Tuscany, just after the death of his brother, Francesco di Medici, in 1588. Renaissance gardens of the later part of the sixteenth century happened to be home to works like music fountains, scenographic water demonstrations and water caprices (giochi d’acqua), but these weren’t outfitted with water in ways which went against gravitation itself.

Ancient Garden Fountain Designers

Ancient Garden Fountain Designers 8809671740740991.jpg Ancient Garden Fountain Designers Commonly working as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and cultivated scholars, all in one, fountain designers were multi-talented people from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century. Throughout the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci illustrated the artist as a innovative master, creator and scientific expert. With his immense curiosity about the forces of nature, he examined the qualities and movement of water and also carefully documented his findings in his now much celebrated notebooks. Early Italian water feature designers converted private villa configurations into ingenious water exhibits full of symbolic meaning and natural beauty by coupling creativity with hydraulic and horticultural experience. The splendors in Tivoli were developed by the humanist Pirro Ligorio, who was famed for his capabilities in archeology, architecture and garden design. Well versed in humanistic topics as well as classic technical readings, some other water feature makers were masterminding the phenomenal water marbles, water functions and water jokes for the various properties around Florence.
