Sculpture As a Staple of Vintage Art in Archaic Greece The primitive Greeks built the very first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, sculptures of young, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the statues. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot extended out of a strict forward-facing pose and the male statues were regularly unclothed, with a strong, powerful shape.
In around 650 BC, the varieties of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was an incredible point of change for the Greeks as they grew into new forms of government, created unique expressions of art, and achieved insights of the people and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are instances of the kinds of clashes that occurred frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
