Bleach can also be dissolved into the water, but this is not an ideal option because it can sicken birds or other animals. Experts suggest that the typical garden fountain undergoes a thorough scrubbing every three-four months. The initial step is to get rid of all of the water. Once it is empty, scrub inside the reservoir with a mild cleanser. A useful tip is to use a toothbrush if there are little hard-to-reach spots. Make sure all the soap is completely washed off.
